Ethics & Scope of Practice

Operating with integrity — when to refer to a licensed clinician, and how to hold your container.

Know your edges

A hypnotherapist does not diagnose, does not name conditions, and does not advise on medication. Where a client's language suggests a medical or psychiatric issue, the honest answer is a referral — offered warmly, not apologetically.

Refer immediately in cases of active suicidal ideation, psychosis, untreated trauma requiring clinical support, eating disorders, or any request to work around a treating clinician.

Consent that is actually informed

Explain what you do, what it is not, what it costs, and what the client may experience — including abreaction — before any induction. Consent given in trance is not consent; establish permissions in advance.

Holding the container

Assume positive intent behind every behavior, including the ones the client hates. Stay transparent about technique. Keep records secure, keep confidentiality except where law requires disclosure, and keep the relationship professional in every respect.

The alliance does more work than any technique. Protect it.
