Understanding Trance Depth
From light relaxation to somnambulism — a map of the territory.
The map
Light: physical relaxation, heaviness, slowed breathing, full awareness of the room. Medium: attention narrows, time distorts, suggestion for comfort or sensation takes hold readily. Deep, sometimes called somnambulism: vivid internal imagery, spontaneous amnesia for parts of the session, and marked responsiveness.
Depth is not the goal
Excellent outcomes happen in light trance every day. Depth is one variable among many — rapport, motivation, and clarity of outcome matter more.
Depth also fluctuates within a single session. A practitioner watches for signs and adjusts rather than chasing a number.
What clients notice
Common reports: limbs feeling heavy or pleasantly distant, a sense that ten minutes passed when it was forty, and a reluctance to move at the end. All of it is ordinary, and none of it means control was ever lost.
