What is Hypnotherapy?

A grounded introduction to what hypnotherapy is — and how it differs from clinical hypnosis practiced by licensed healthcare providers.

A focused state, not a lost one

Hypnosis is a state of narrowed, absorbed attention — the same state you slip into when a film pulls you in or a drive home passes without your noticing. Nothing is taken away from you. You remain aware, able to speak, and able to stop at any moment.

Hypnotherapy simply uses that absorbed state deliberately. When attention narrows, suggestion, imagery, and rehearsal land with more weight than they do in ordinary conversation.

What a session actually looks like

Most of a first meeting is conversation: what you want to change, what you have already tried, and what the change would make possible. Only then does the practitioner guide you into a relaxed, focused state and work with the material you brought.

Sessions at IBPH are held online over Zoom, usually running 45 to 90 minutes.

How it differs from clinical care

Hypnotherapy as offered through IBPH is a complementary, non-clinical service. It does not diagnose, does not treat disease, and is not a substitute for care from a licensed medical or mental-health provider.

Licensed clinicians may also use hypnosis inside their scope of practice. That is a different thing from what a hypnotherapist offers, and an ethical practitioner will tell you plainly when a referral is the right answer.
